Indian students may give China a miss !!

NEW DELHI: Many Indian students are rejigging plans to study in China this year, given the current border tensions, and are looking at opportunities in the Middle East, Africa and other parts of Asia, while some are waiting it out. Before the Covid-19 outbreak, over 23,000 students from India studied in China, pursuing mainly medicine and management courses, according to experts and official data. Indians were the fourth-largest contingent among foreign students in China. Covid-19 derailed the plans of many Indians to study in China and the recent developments between the two countries may only push China further down the order of preference as a student destination. Students have started cancelling their plans, or are considering the option, according to education startups Collegedekho, Collegify, ADMITAS and Yocket, which help students find colleges outside India. They are instead looking at the destinations in the Middle East, North Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, said Adarsh Khandelwal, cofounder of Collegify. “It is unlikely that there would be many takers for Chinese colleges considering in the current scenario. Already, many had cancelled their plans due to Covid-19 and now the tension at the border may further impact the decisions,” said Sumeet Jain, cofounder of Yocket.
